Australian NRL player Talatau Amone has been found guilty of assaulting a tradesman with a hammer.

Stand-off Amone, 21, was charged with destroying property, assault occasioning actual bodily harm in the company of others and intimidation.

ABC said he was found guilty of three offences after a two-day hearing in Wollongong in New South Wales.

Amone’s lawyer, Elias Tabchouri, said the matter was a case of mistaken identity and is “far from over”.

Amone’s club, St George Illawarra Dragons, said he has been “stood down from all club activities until further notice”.

Amone, who has won three caps for Tonga and made 54 appearances for the Dragons, will be sentenced in six weeks.

“We respect any decision of any court – [it] doesn’t necessarily mean we agree with it,” Tabchouri said.

“This matter is still ongoing. There’s still an appeals process as well.”
