Runaway Joseph RTW Fall 2023

After looking at works by the American sculptor Richard Serra, Joseph’s co-creative directors Anna Lundback Dyhr and Frederik Dyhr were left thinking about the colors black, white and copper.

The Paris-based husband-and-wife duo said they work similarly to Serra, with both practices based on the idea of longevity and the quest to perfect original ideas.

“There’s a lot of looking around, looking at others, but for us it’s important to keep looking inwards and being timeless, sophisticated and effortless,” said Frederik of the collections he’s been designing with his wife since October 2020.

For fall 2023 they continued to focus on sharp, but comfortable, clothing. There was a black double-breasted Milano knit jacket with matching trousers; a raincoat with a silky finish, and Joseph’s signature barcode stripes on separates and tie-dyed onto a dress.

The duo also introduced a new fabric to their lexicon, tweed, which they said was inspired by Joseph’s British roots.

“We asked our friends in Italy how they could reinterpret tweed in a slightly more modern way,” said Frederik, adding that Joseph’s tweed is smooth and without the bobble effect that’s often found on traditional tweed jackets.

A black bonded leather coat with white painted edges was another winning design. It had a whiff of the dominatrix, but there was nothing scary about it.

Accessories included oversized leather bags, pouches and high sandals. “We wanted to elongate the silhouette by creating a new sandal with a high heel that we haven’t had before,” said Anna, referring to the shoe’s big, thumping block heel.

“Our woman walks strongly and forcefully,” added Anna, imitating the walk with her hands.
